Machteld Hiemstra is a partner and attorney specialising in regulatory law, liability and patent-related matters, with a strong focus on the life sciences sector. She advises and represents companies operating in highly regulated markets, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices and consumer health.
Machteld assists clients with complex issues relating to market access, regulatory enforcement, product compliance and liability. She regularly acts for clients in civil and administrative proceedings at all levels, including the European courts and the Unified Patent Court (UPC). She also frequently acts as coordinating counsel in cross-border disputes and investigations.
Combining expertise in both regulatory and patent law with extensive in-house experience, Machteld brings a deep understanding of the technical and commercial context of her clients’ businesses. Her work includes SPC litigation, product protection strategies, clinical trials, marketing and promotion, as well as data protection and privacy matters.
Machteld started her career at Stibbe and later joined Freshfields before moving in-house at AkzoNobel in an international specialist role. She subsequently worked at DLA Piper, Bird & Bird and Hogan Lovells, and has been with Simmons & Simmons since 2013 (with a brief period at Pinsent Masons).
