The Crypto Asset Markets Regulation (MiCAR) will come into force on December 30, 2024. This regulates services requiring a license with regard to crypto assets, such as the qualification of assets and specific categories of crypto assets. This article addresses important questions about issues such as custody of crypto assets, access to trading platforms and licensing requirements for proprietary trading. In addition, the overlap of crypto services with existing financial supervisory regimes, such as payment services and consumer credit, is examined. The article also discusses the international aspects of MiCAR, with attention to the lack of a third country policy and the substance requirements of ESMA.
