On 1 January 2025, Jan Broekhuizen resigned from the General Council of the Netherlands Bar and became an endowed professor of the Legal Profession at the University of Amsterdam.
The departure of Jan Broekhuizen as a board member of the Netherlands Bar (‘NOvA’) and the acceptance of his new professorship were announced on 4 December 2024 at the meeting of the Board of Representatives at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. Board member Dirk Giltay Veth delivered a speech to Broekhuizen on this occasion.
The chair in the Legal Profession (in Dutch: Advocatuur) was established through the endeavours of the Stichting Leerstoel Advocatuur (Legal Profession Chair Foundation) and made possible by the NOvA. Jan Broekhuizen has been appointed for a term of five years. He succeeds Diana de Wolff, who held this chair since 2017.
Because the Advocatuur chair was established and is funded by the NOvA, it cannot be combined with a membership of the General Council. Jan Broekhuizen: “The coming five years at the University of Amsterdam will give me a good sequel to my doctorate and every opportunity to contribute for much longer to the interesting themes relevant to the proper functioning of the legal profession within our democratic state under the rule of law. As far as I am concerned this is not a goodbye, but a new role.”
Jan Broekhuizen has been an attorney since 1997, a partner at Kennedy Van der Laan since 2015, and a member of the General Council since November 2022. He will combine his endowed professorship with his practice as an attorney.
